Overview
The $1M Museum Initiative by Verizon and NYC Media Lab at New York University partners with museums and other cultural institutions to develop educational content for Verizon Innovative Learning HQ Portal. Teachers can sign up for free and explore VR and AR lesson plans they want to use in their own classroom. The Memorial Art Gallery, as one of the recipients of this grant, is developing AR lesson plans focused on artwork from the museum.

Augmented Reality in the Memorial Art Gallery
“The content we build on Verizon’s app will serve the needs of museum educators. In particular, we are interested in the social and emotional learning curriculum and how art and technology can provide young learners with the space to explore self-awareness”, says Ashenfelder.
Expanded Learning Collaboration (ELC)
The Expanded Learning Collaboration is a partnership between the Memorial Art Gallery and the Rochester City School District (RCSD) to offer students in grades 2 through 5 in Rochester the opportunity to visit and participate in creative workshops at the museum.
Building on the lesson plans of ELC, our goal for the Museum Initiative is to help teachers and museum educators meet Rochester City School District grade-level curricula and NY state standards through innovative learning apps in the 5G EdTech Program.
Lesson Plans
Our lesson plans are designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of augmented reality while learning about art and art history.
Consisting of three educational modules and one teacher training module, students will engage with and explore the paintings and sculptures, first in their own classroom and then in person at the Memorial Art Gallery. They will also create their original works of art based on their interpretation of the artworks presented as “Sneak Peaks”. Student artwork will then be scanned for inclusion in a CocoCast “cast”.
Objectives include
- Perceiving and analyzing artistic work
- Interpreting its intent and meaning by gathering and using evidence
- Contemplating the relationship of art and community
Students explore artwork such as
- Jeromy Myers, Sunday Morning, 1907
- Jacob Lawrence, Summer Street Scene in Harlem, 1948
- Chinese traditional, Camel and Court Lady, 700-750
- Stuart Davis, Landscape with Garage Lights, 1931-32
